Concussion & Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can present in many different ways depending upon what part or parts of the brain are injured. Individual assessment is required to understand the symptoms, involved portions of the brain, and severity of injury. Approximately 1.7 million Americans sustain a TBI each year and TBI is the number one cause of death and disability in children and young adults.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), also known as concussions, are a common cause of temporary neurocognitive deficits, headache, and other symptoms of brain malfunction. Although many patients recover from a concussion, up to 33 percent experience persistent cognitive problems. Estimates are that 15 percent of these cases continue to have persistent cognitive symptoms over one year later and occurrences of depression and anxiety are estimated to be five-fold higher after an mTBI.

Typical treatments for Concussion and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often leave the patient feeling like there’s not much that can be done. Despite troubling symptoms — headaches, sleep disruption, cognitive failures, anxiety and depression — current standard of care for TBI in the standard medical model calls for rest, over the counter medications, and antidepressants. Therefore, TBI patients must rest for weeks, and usually go through a gradual reintroduction of exercise and mental activity (school, work). Sometimes, physical therapy or balance therapy is necessary. Supplements or hyperbaric oxygen therapy may provide some benefit, but that is not reliable.

Laser Unattenuated Multi-Watt infrared light therapy (LUMIT) offers and exciting and highly effective new approach to the treatment of TBI and concussion. Patients experience a marked reduction in symptoms with as few as 10-20 treatments.
